In holistic, Eastern, and alternative healthcare traditions, numerous therapies and healing practices aim to re-energize the human body at a cellular level, relieve chronic pain, and release stored trauma or toxins. Among these is sound healing, which harnesses therapeutic benefits from the vibrations of specific frequencies found in nature.
Ancient indigenous cultures have long used sound vibrations for healing, a tradition that persists today. A simple search on YouTube yields thousands of videos replicating these practices, offering sound frequencies that claim to calm the nervous system, activate the vagus nerve, or even provide pain relief.
A modern adaptation of this practice is sound baths, where individuals experience music therapy or frequency healing in person. Practitioners use instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, chimes, rattles, tuning forks, and even the human voice. Percussion instruments may also mimic the sound of a heartbeat, symbolizing life.
The majority of participants report positive experiences with sound therapy, describing it as deeply relaxing and healing. Many find it effective for anxiety reduction, heart rate stabilization, and pain management.
Scientific Recognition of Music Therapy
Music therapy has well-documented benefits, especially for children and adults who are non-verbal or cognitively impaired. Over the last few decades, numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the direct connection between music and brain activity.
During my time as a teacher, I witnessed this firsthand. In a special education preschool classroom, most of my students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) did not speak—until it was time to sing. Suddenly, a chorus of voices filled the room, their faces lighting up as they connected in a way they hadn’t before. Their ability to express, evoke, and mirror emotions through music was undeniable.
A 2023 study confirmed what many have observed for years: the brain exhibits plasticity when exposed to music. Neuroplasticity—the ability of the brain to form new connections and pathways—is crucial not just for brain trauma, strokes, and cognitive impairments but also for overall healing and nervous system regulation. The evidence supporting the profound impact of sound and music therapy is extensive and well-documented.
The Credibility Gap: Music Therapy vs. Frequency Healing
While music therapy is an established profession—offered at accredited universities—frequency healing remains outside mainstream medical and scientific circles. Sound therapy academies, such as the British Academy of Sound Therapy and the Academy of Sound Healing, provide professional training, but their certifications are not equivalent to formal degrees in music therapy or neuroscience.
Despite its growing popularity, sound therapy is not yet widely recognized within conventional medicine. The language used by sound therapy practitioners—such as “experiencing the profound effects of vibrational healing”—does not align with the terminology found in scientific literature or clinical research. As a result, the scientific community remains cautious about fully endorsing it.
Nevertheless, the effects of sound frequencies on brain activity and human health are undeniable. The positive impact of specific frequencies is a universal human experience, not merely a placebo effect.
Beyond Sound Healing: Exploring Frequency Energy Practices
Other emerging frequency energy healing modalities exist, such as Network Spinal Analysis (NSA)—a practice currently in the early stages of scientific research. NSA-certified chiropractors use light touches along the spinal column and energy centers of the body to facilitate communication at a quantum level. Many of these techniques are rooted in quantum physics, a field that explores the unpredictable behaviors of matter and energy.
During my personal exploration, I visited an NSA chiropractor in Mallorca, Spain—a region known for spiritual retreats and alternative medicine practices. Unlike traditional chiropractic care, which involves spinal adjustments, NSA focuses on breathwork and the movement of respiratory waves along the spine. This approach aims to increase self-awareness and facilitate the release of stored trauma, tension, and stress.
One striking aspect of my NSA experience was the integration of sound frequencies during sessions. Unlike typical doctor’s offices, the waiting and treatment rooms were filled with soothing music and frequencies, creating an atmosphere that encouraged deep relaxation. When combined with breath work, this auditory environment had an immediate calming effect on my nervous system.
Final Thoughts: Staying Open-Minded About Healing
While the legitimacy of many frequency-based healing practices is still under investigation, the benefits of music therapy and human touch are well-documented. Whether or not one chooses to explore sound baths, NSA, or other frequency healing modalities, there is no doubt that sound and human connection play a vital role in well-being.
Scientific research on alternative frequency healing is still limited, and mainstream acceptance remains a challenge. However, keeping an open mind allows us to learn from diverse perspectives and experiences. If you’re curious about sound therapy or NSA chiropractic care, even as a means to calm your nervous system, you may find it to be a valuable addition to your self-care routine.
From my observations and conversations with dozens of people receiving NSA treatments, most participants found tangible benefits. Whether it’s through music, touch, or other holistic therapies, there is no denying the profound impact these practices can have on our mind-body connection and overall health.
