Introduction
Feeling shaky, jittery, and like you can’t control your body is no joke. The nervous system plays a vital role in regulating the entire body, from the spinal cord to the nerve cells that communicate with different organs. When you have a well regulated nervous system you are regulating your entire body. It is sending electrical signals to the rest of your body. The good news? There are clear signs of a dysregulated nervous system —recognizing them is the first step toward restoring balance.
1. Chronic Stress & Anxiety
The autonomic nervous system helps manage stress, but chronic stress can overwhelm the parasympathetic nervous system. Do you experience racing thoughts, mood swings, dissociation, or difficulty feeling safe in relationships and healthcare settings? The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for true rest, recovery, and digestion. When you’re exposed to prolonged stress—whether from an unstable job, toxic relationships, traumatic experiences, or a restrictive diet—your body suffers. A lack of proper nourishment, excess toxins, and neglecting self-care can all contribute to a dysregulated parasympathetic nervous system (PubMed Central).
Supporting your parasympathetic nervous system requires more than deep breathing or muscle relaxation. Restoring gut microbiome, minerals, and hormones is key to activating the vagus nerve. Prioritizing functional nutrition and lifestyle habits that calm the nervous system is essential.
2. Irregular Heart Rate & Blood Pressure Changes
The central nervous system regulates heart rate and blood pressure through communication between the brain, spinal cord, and blood vessels. If your nervous system is struggling, you may experience rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or blood pressure fluctuations.
I remember the first time I experienced this. Instead of receiving helpful guidance, I was simply told it was anxiety—and that was it. I felt lost. What I needed to hear was that my symptoms were caused by a dysregulated nervous system due to poor circulation, lymph stagnation, an imbalanced diet, lack of movement, and a disrupted gut microbiome from repeated medications, tests, and toxin exposure.
3. Digestive Issues & Gut Imbalances
The nervous system and digestive tract are deeply interconnected. The vagus nerve plays a key role in gut function and the gut-brain connection. Symptoms like bloating, constipation, indigestion, acid reflux, or irregular bowel movements can indicate that your nervous system is struggling. Maybe you’ve already tried whole food diets, elimination diets, low-FODMAP plans, fiber-rich foods, or probiotics—but nothing works as expected. This often happens because you’re approaching gut health without considering your body as a holistic, biochemically unique system.
4. Chronic Pain & Muscle Tension
The somatic nervous system controls muscle movement, but when it’s dysregulated, you may experience muscle weakness, chronic pain, or tension. Even without a formal diagnosis, persistent muscle tension, joint stiffness, or nerve pain can signal nervous system dysfunction. If you have a structural condition and rely on bodywork or surgery, additional tools (including functional nutrition) can help you regulate your nervous system and enhance muscle relaxation.
5. Memory Loss & Cognitive Fog
Your brain function relies on a healthy nervous system for processing and storing information. If you struggle with forgetfulness, concentration issues, or slow thinking, your nervous system may be calling for attention. If medical evaluations rule out underlying conditions, consider functional nutrition counseling, lifestyle changes, and specific lab tests to uncover deeper causes. Optimizing cellular health can also help prevent neurodegenerative diseases.
6. Weak Immune Function & Frequent Illnesses
The nervous system and immune system are closely connected (ResearchGate). When the nervous system is imbalanced, the immune response weakens. Signs include frequent illnesses, slow healing, and unexplained inflammation. Getting sick too often affects your daily life. Improving sleep quality, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can strengthen your immune system.
7. Hormonal Imbalances
The parasympathetic nervous system regulates hormone production. Chronic stress can disrupt this balance, leading to irregular periods, painful periods, and PMS symptoms. Ignoring nervous system health only perpetuates hormonal imbalances. Supporting stress management, nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments can restore harmony (Harvard Health).
8. Neurological Symptoms & Nerve Dysfunction
In severe cases, damage to nerve cells can lead to neurological conditions. Prolonged dysfunction may cause tingling, burning sensations, numbness, or coordination issues. Acute or recurring neurological symptoms can stem from accidents, physical trauma, surgeries, birth experiences, or reactions to medical interventions. Seeking professional care is often necessary to get diagnosed and covered treatments, such as physical therapy. However, oftentimes more is necessary.
I have personally experienced peripheral neuropathy, tingling, and numbness. Guided nervous system support and functional nutrition made a significant difference in my recovery and to finally experience progressive muscle relaxation. Something I longed for without long-term pharmaceutical intervention!
9. Sleep Disturbances & Fatigue
The autonomic nervous system regulates sleep cycles and energy levels. If you struggle with insomnia, trouble falling asleep, or waking up exhausted, despite maintaining a bedtime routine, you may need additional nervous system support—and that’s okay!
Sometimes a consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time, and incorporating calming foods, is not enough. You might need some more support and that is okay!
10. Increased Risk of Degenerative Diseases
The nervous system’s complex network can deteriorate over time, increasing the risk of conditions like Parkinson’s disease, blood clot issues, and neurological disorders. This isn’t meant to scare you, but rather to emphasize the importance of preventative care. Even if you feel relatively healthy, early functional nutrition interventions and professional guidance can make a big difference—especially if you’re already experiencing symptoms like tremors or difficulty completing daily tasks.
Conclusion: The First Step to a Healthy Nervous System
Listening to your body’s signals is key to optimal health. Symptoms are your body’s way of communicating with you—treat them with curiosity and care. Small lifestyle changes, like adopting a nutrient-dense diet and seeking professional guidance, can help restore balance.
